I am a first generation American, my parents migrated from Greece. My father was stationed here in the US as a diplomat. My parents later divorced, and my father moved back to Greece. My mother remarried, to my stepfather, who started a flower business. I started working at a young age, helping and managing the family business while in school. Having a passion for Education, I did not want to take over the family business and went into teaching. I was accepted into the best teaching college, Columbia University. I could not afford it and I did not qualify for any assistance. I scrambled and found a research position at St. Luke’s Roosevelt hospital that offered tuition reimbursement. I secured a teaching position and was very happy. When I was up for tenure, I also found out I was pregnant. Like many teachers it was not affordable to have help raising a child, and I decided to be a stay at home Mom. I was also not offered my position. Regardless I could not see myself handing my paycheck over and someone else raising them.
My mother was a seamstress and ever since I can remember she worked on her sewing machine, every morning when I woke up and at night when I went to sleep. I wanted my children to have that kind of role model. So whenever I had a chance between cooking, cleaning and diaper changes, I would work on my computer. I had some failed attempts to make educational toys and start a magazine. I discovered that my true passion was still to help parents find a way to teach their children about their culture while in another country. The first site was very simple and linked to newspapers, radio and TV in other countries. I started a cooking channel on YouTube channel, Nurture Culture. At first, I would post videos of my children cooking. I quickly realized the dangers, the Internet, and that type of exposure would have on them, and I removed those videos. My goal initially was to have cultural music play with the cooking, but I was served with warnings of copyright. This resulted, and we used the music only published and selected by YouTube. Initially my company and its purpose was Forever Greek. I would only connect Greeks. A jewish friend advised me of the overlap and encouraged me to do more. I brainstormed and came up with Nurture Culture. I was very excited! It was not a term being used so she advised me to trademark. Being the stereotypical Greek woman of that time, I learned how and filed the copyright. I went on to secure all URL and started my journey. I did everything from video filming, editing, posting and web design by myself. Now, I am ready to help people not only learn about their culture. I want to help anyone and everyone explore, learn and even move to the country with the culture of their choice. On Nurtureculture.com people will find hand selected sites, the true National Tourism site for each country, for the most accurate and current information.
